Common Cents Open Tennis Tournament
It
is tennis time again in the Black Hills. The 40th annual Common
Cents Black Hills Open Tennis Tournaments were played at Sioux Park
with the junior event first, followed by the adult tournament.
The event is hosted by the Black Hills Tennis Association.
What began as a mostly regional tournament over the Fourth of July
weekend, has now become a United States Tennis Association sanctioned
Level 5 junior tournament with nearly 100 players from South Dakota,
North Dakota, and Minnesota. All participants came ready to hit
the courts. Over half of the junior tournament participants travel
from outside the Black Hills to play in this event.
Rapid City Stevens' Jack Hamburg and Sydney Moyle won the boys'
18-under and girls' 16-under singles championships, respectively,
at the Common Cents Junior Open.
Local tennis talents were tested that weekend at Sioux Park for
the Common Cents Adult Open Tournament as well.
The adult division of the event was hosting more than 60 players
this year as play began at Sioux Park. This tournament has $6,000
in prize money up for grabs. The 2010 tournament champion was Tony
Larson, ranked No. 1 in the USTA Northern Section Men's Open Division.
Larson recently won a bid into the U.S. Open National Playoffs in
August. Whitney Paluch was the Women's Open winner.
We would like to thank all the participants and congratulate all
the winners on a job well done!
